Anyone who enjoys negotiating the open country but feels that in the wintertime they are out of luck should try to closest (and perhaps the most fun) alternative, snowmobiling. Snowmobiling really is a cross between a dog sled, a motorcycle, and an ATV but, with the addition of feeling like you are floating on air. The thrills and excitement of using snowmobiles has causes thousands of these snow horses to be sold across the country and around the world.
The earliest snowmobiles were equipped with power that came from huge fans that propelled metal frames, but with the advent of the two-stroke, and later the four-stroke engine, snowmobiling as a sport took off in popularity. To a great extent, the first of those who enjoyed snowmobiles were those who used them for basic transportation and enjoyment. Later, as designs evolved, snowmobiles became a staple for hunters and others who used them for their livings.
In 1954 the designs of what we know today as snowmobiles where created to facilitate all sorts of transportation needs. These included hunting, police work, and other uses. Soon, however, those who embraced snowmobiles included recreational users who enjoy them practically wherever there is snow.
As long as snowmobiles are used in a reasonably manner, they are very safe for drivers and passengers of practically all ages. It should be noted that the inherent maneuverability, speed, and acceleration of snowmobiles requires that drivers have some degree of upper body strength and skill to operate them safely and efficiently. This is especially true when they are being operated on ground that is unstable or rough terrain. By contrast, when operated on flatter and more even surfaces, snowmobiles are very safe and easy to operate. Regardless of where they are being operated, users most often refer to the experience as "like floating."
Just as is the case with most sports, when drivers and passengers are equipped with the proper equipment, training (some of which can be gained at no charge), and caution, snowmobiling is a save and enjoyable sport for all who choose to participate in it.
