Surfing
Ah, the vast magnitude of the ocean. On a planet made up mostly of water, it is no wonder many of us long to experience the waves first hand. If you have finally decided that it is time to try surfing, follow your dream to a reputable surf shop and sign up for some lessons. You can rent your gear and see if you like the sport prior to purchasing everything and trying to figure out those key tactics on your own.
Surfing Takes Practice
Even if you are normally awesome at things the first time you try them, give yourself time for a learning curve when it comes to surfing. There is a LOT going on simultaneously. This is part of the fun! You will sustain a total mental and physical workout. Maintaining your balance, keeping your core engaged and toning your legs and arms with all of that swimming and paddling! Swimming is reputed to be one of the best total body workouts available to man. Not to mention the extreme cardio that occurs when you are at one with the waves. If you need to sit on your board and ride a few waves to catch your breath or your courage; do it.
Staying Orientated
Even those who are experienced surfers can find it tricky to be at the mercy of the waves from time to time. Trying not to become disorientated when you are upside-down is much easier if you stay calm at all times. You are not trying to control the water; you are literally going with the flow. If you find yourself upside-down and backwards, allow your surfboard and ankle strap guide you to surface.
